First Communion

Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church

First Communion

Preparation for First Holy Communion is covered in the 2nd grade curriculum for baptized students who have completed a minimum of one year of Religious Education prior to the beginning of the 2nd grade (during the 1st grade). Older students, those who have not completed the 1st grade curriculum or children who have not been baptized will need to contact the Director of Religious Education.

To receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion, children must:

  • Attend Mass regularly.
  • Attend Religious Education classes (minimum 80% attendance*.)
  • Parents must provide a copy of the child's baptismal record.
  • Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before receiving their First Holy Communion (this is a requirement of canon law)

The preparation for First Communion includes, in addition to the Reconciliation requirements, a day retreat, rehearsal, and the celebration of Holy Mass.

The parents of students who attend Catholic Schools for the preparation for First Communion need to contact the Director of Religious  Education to coordinate the reception of these Sacraments.

* Situations that cause a student to attend less than 80% of the preparation classes will be reviewed on a case by case situation to ensure that the student is properly prepared for the reception of the Sacrament. Make up classes will be scheduled if necessary.
