The Lenten Disciplines
The traditional Lenten disciplines are:
  • Fasting and Abstinence,
  • Repentance and Penance
  • Prayer, and
  • Almsgiving.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting, meaning that we take only one meal, without any meat, during the day.  All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence, where we eat no meat.  Many people take upon themselves additional forms of fasting, which they typically select because of the spiritual benefit they will receive. While people often joke about giving up chocolate for Lent, the point of these Lenten disciplines is to clear the clutter out of our lives so we can hear the word of the Lord, spoken personally to us.

Operation Rice Bowl
The parish invites all to participate in the Operation Rice Bowl program. This is a call to eat more simply and frugally on Fridays during Lent, and donate the money saved to help the poor via Catholic Relief Services, the worldwide arm of the United States Catholic Church to help people in need due to war, famine, environmental/weather disasters, economic and political corruption, and extreme poverty.  See http://www.crsricebowl.org/ for more information.
